About Our Home

The Misfit Mission is conveniently located in Wilder, Vermont, just 5 minutes from all areas of the Upper Valley and Dartmouth College. Sara's cozy, relaxed space is designed to help dogs settle in, unwind, and feel comfortable. We have a fenced in back yard, crates, beds, toys, leashes, and training tools available for your dog’s use, and we do our best to match your pup’s usual routine. And, of course, every guest gets their choice of sleeping arrangement, whether that’s a comfy dog bed, a crate, or another safe spot that feels just right. Sara's home is also located within walking distance of the Connecticut river and Kilowatt Dog park. These options are available as appropriate for your dog.

Sara has 15 years of experience owning, caring for, and rescuing shelter dogs. She’s fostered with local Vermont animal rescues for more than 8 years and has helped over 25 rescue dogs find their forever homes. Calm, easygoing, and attentive to dog energy and body language, Sara creates a steady environment where dogs can settle in and feel secure. Her first dog, Beauregard, the original misfit, remains the inspiration behind Sara’s dream of The Misfit Mission

All About Niko

Niko is The Misfit Mission's 8-year-old male resident dog, and Sara’s second foster dog who quickly became a forever family member. From day one, he had that special, steady kind of heart that makes you want to protect him forever. He’s wonderfully dog-social, gentle, and naturally submissive, and he has a unique way of helping visiting dogs feel at ease. Over the years, Niko has taught many of our animal guests more about love, patience, and settling into the moment than we ever could.

Like many rescues, Niko has a sensitive side. He can be fearful of strangers and reactive on leash, and we’ve spent a lot of time working with trainers to help him move through that fear. We handle introductions thoughtfully, keep the environment calm, and use management tools that set everyone up for success.
